This year’s Golden Globes were a little bit different from usual. They were a lot more political.
Many celebrities adorned black-and-white pins that said “BE GOOD” and “ICE OUT,” and Real Time host Bill Maher was not happy about it.
The pins and celebrities’ statements followed the fatal shooting of Renee Good, who was killed last week in Minneapolis by an ICE officer, identified as Jonathan Ross, while sitting in her car.
- The Golden Globes featured political activism with celebrities wearing 'BE GOOD' and 'ICE OUT' pins honoring Renee Good.
- Bill Maher called the shooting 'terrible' but refused to wear a pin, saying the event is for show business, not activism.
- Mark Ruffalo condemned Renee Good's shooting as murder and criticized political figures, emphasizing fear in the U.S.
- Wanda Sykes urged Americans to 'speak up' against the government and teased Bill Maher for downplaying activism.

The shooting of Good on Wednesday sparked protests across the U.S., with demonstrators calling for accountability in her death, especially in Minneapolis, where ICE is conducting its largest enforcement operation to date.
While Maher said Good’s shooting was “terrible” and ICE agents acted like “thugs,” he said he would not consider wearing a pin.
Speaking to USA Today on the red carpet, Maher was asked by reporter Ralphie Aversa, “Do you feel that’s effective or no?”

“Come on, we’re here for show business today. Uhh, you know, it was a terrible thing that happened, and it shouldn’t have happened. And, if they didn’t act… pic.twitter.com/hYEBEuoFhh

Chuckling, Maher said, “Oh come on, we’re just here for show business today. It was a terrible thing that happened and it shouldn’t have happened.”
“And if they didn’t act like such thugs it wouldn’t have had to happen. But I don’t need to wear a pin about it,” he said before moving on to the next interviewer.

Mark Ruffalo also spoke to USA Today, saying the pin was for Good and “the people of the United States who are terrorized and scared today,” before saying that he was “one of them.”
“I love this country, and what I am seeing here happening is not America,” Ruffalo said.
He said Good was “murdered” and that Vice President JD Vance was “lying” about the shooting. He continued, saying President Donald Trump “illegally invaded” and started a “war” with Venezuela, before calling him a “pedophile” and “convicted rapist.”

Wanda Sykes also commented on Trump, telling Variety that Americans need to “speak up and shut this rogue government down.” At another point, Sykes commented on Maher, saying he “gives us so much—but I would love a little less.”
The Trump administration has defended Ross, claiming that Good had been “stalking and impeding” the agency’s “lawful operations” throughout the day before the shooting.
Good’s neighbor and eyewitness refuted this allegation, although one person who knew her said she was part of a network aimed at disrupting ICE activity across Minneapolis.

While both Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem alleged Good was trying to run over the agents with her car, video released later appeared to show that Good’s tires were turned away from the agents.
Vice President Vance then implied the facts were irrelevant because the shooter was “doing his job” and was therefore covered by full federal immunity.
Bodycam footage from the ICE agent who fired the shots shows Good telling him, “That’s fine, dude, I’m not mad at you.”
The camera shows Good’s wife protesting against ICE’s presence nearby. Ross tells Good to stop as she attempts to drive away, and steps towards the driver’s door. But as she pulls away, he fires multiple shots through the side window at Good and calls her a “f*****g b***h.”
