McKee’s vehicle became the key piece of evidence that linked him to the crime.
Court records show detectives tracked a car seen entering the Weinland Park neighborhood shortly before the killings and leaving soon after. Surveillance footage captured the vehicle roughly 325 miles from McKee’s home in Illinois on the night of the shootings.
Police later located the same car near McKee’s workplace in Rockford, Illinois.
McKee and Monique had a two-year marriage, after which they got divorced in May 2017. Records showed the divorce was amicable, according to The Columbus Dispatch.

Almost a week after the murder, police released surveillance footage showing a “person of interest” walking down an alley near the couple’s home. Family members had originally dismissed the video, saying the person could be “somebody walking home drunk from a bar.”
However, it is unclear if the person in the video is McKee.
Investigators have since confirmed McKee owned the vehicle, according to court documents.

Authorities arrested him on Saturday, hours after a judge issued an arrest warrant. The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office booked him shortly before noon. He remains in custody and is scheduled for extradition to Ohio, where he was expected to appear in court on Monday.
While Monique and Spencer Tepe were found dead inside their home, the couple’s two young children, ages 1 and 4, and the family dog were unharmed.
Concern grew after Spencer Tepe failed to show up for work.

A colleague tried to contact him for three hours before requesting a wellness check. Another of the couple’s friends who went to the home later told 911 dispatchers they could hear children crying inside.
Columbus police responded and discovered the bodies. Investigators believe the shootings occurred between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.
Monique married Spencer Tepe in 2020. Spencer worked as a dentist in the Columbus area.

A relative told reporters the family expected McKee’s arrest but chose not to speak publicly during the investigation. The relative said they did not want to interfere with police work.
Police have not identified a motive for the killings. Public records show McKee attended medical school at Ohio State University and holds medical licenses in Illinois and California. He worked as a vascular surgeon in the Rockford area, where police later located his vehicle.
