Rob Reiner spent decades as one of Hollywood’s most outspoken progressive voices, using his fame not just to endorse Democratic candidates but to campaign for policy changes.
Over the decades, he campaigned and spoke out on issues ranging from early childhood development and marriage equality to gun safety and climate change.
In addition to his progressive campaigning, Reiner, 78, was an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump and his policies.
- Rob Reiner was a prominent progressive voice, advocating for early childhood development, marriage equality, gun safety, and climate change.
- He spearheaded California’s Proposition 10 in 1998, creating First 5 California to fund early education and health programs for children.

His legacy is now being revisited after he and his wife, Michele Singer, 68, were found dead by Los Angeles police at their Brentwood home on Sunday.
Authorities are treating the case as an apparent homicide, but have not yet released further details on the incident.
However, the BBC reported that the couple’s son Nick, 32, has been arrested and charged in connection with their deaths.
People, citing exclusive sources, further reported that the couple had suffered stab wounds.

Reiner first became a household name while playing the liberal, Meathead, on All in the Family before directing films including When Harry Met Sally…, The Princess Bride, Stand By Me, Misery, A Few Good Men, and This Is Spinal Tap.
Unlike many celebrity activists, Reiner focused heavily on policy, particularly research and public messaging around the earliest years of childhood.

He spearheaded California’s Proposition 10 in 1998, a ballot initiative that imposed a tobacco tax to create dedicated funding for services benefiting children from prenatal stages through age 5.
The measure passed and led to the creation of First 5 California, an agency that invested tobacco tax revenues in early education, health, and safety programs for young children.
Reiner served as the organization’s first chairman and often described early brain development as a national priority.
Reflecting on his advocacy in an interview with K-12 Dive in 2018, Reiner said he was inspired to influence public policy after reflecting on how his early years affected him.
Reiner is remembered for his political activism as well as his creative work
“I started thinking about my early years and how they affected me, and I realized … how important the early years were to me and how they shaped me. And I started thinking, how can this be translated into public policy in some way?”
“We know that if you give children the right kind of start in life, you’re going to reduce drug abuse, child abuse, teen pregnancy, incarceration,” Reiner added.
Reiner’s support for marriage equality was another defining theme of his advocacy work.
He was a co-founder of the American Foundation for Equal Rights, the organization that brought the legal challenge against California’s Proposition 8–the state ballot measure that had banned same-sex marriage.

He spoke publicly about the issue, framing equal treatment under the law as both a civil-rights cause and a moral imperative.
“I am unbelievably proud to be part of this. I couldn’t have imagined that I would ever be involved in anything as historically significant as this in my life,” Reiner said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2010.
On gun safety, Reiner was equally clear in his public remarks: he decried gun violence and urged universal background checks to better improve safety.
While his advocacy spanned many Democratic concerns, another of those the actor was passionate about was climate change.

Reiner also became known for his direct and often harsh critique of Trump.
In interviews over the years, he characterized Trump’s approach to politics as dangerous to democratic norms and warned against what he saw as efforts to undermine independent institutions.
Speaking to MSNBC in October, he warned that democracy under Trump was being eroded.
“This is just the beginning, and people have to understand our democracy is being taken away from us, and we only have about a year,” Reiner said.
Reiner was a staunch critic of President Trump
“People care about their pocketbook issues, the price of eggs, they care about their health care, and they should. Those are the things that directly affect them.
“But if they lose their democracy, all of these rights, the freedom of speech, the freedom to pray the way you want, the freedom to protest and not go to jail, not be sent out in the country with no due process, all these things will be taken away from them, and we have to educate the public that this is what’s happening right now in America,” Reiner added.
Following his death, many well-known Democrats have paid their respects and reflected on his long political legacy.
“Here’s this unique human being who really did make the leap between entertainment and politics,” Democratic strategist Ace Smith told Los Angeles Times.
“And he really spent the time to understand policy, really, in its true depth, and to make a huge impact in California.”

“He wanted to make a difference. And he did, and he did profoundly,” Smith added.
California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed similar sentiments as he paid tribute to Reiner in a social media post, describing him as a “big-hearted genius.”
“Rob was a passionate advocate for children and for civil rights — from taking on Big Tobacco, fighting for marriage equality, to serving as a powerful voice in early education,” Newsom said.
“He made California a better place through his good works. Rob will be remembered for his remarkable filmography and for his extraordinary contribution to humanity.”
