President Donald Trump is threatening to sue comedian Trevor Noah over a line he delivered while presenting the Grammy Awards on Sunday—with his latest threat of legal action only managing to turn the quip into an online firestorm.

Noah largely steered clear of thorny issues during his sixth stint as Grammys host, until late on. But after the song of the year was announced, the South African-born comedian delivered a line that drew a rapid retort from Trump and quickly blew up across social media.

Highlights
  • Trevor Noah made a joke at the Grammys referencing Donald Trump's reported links to Jeffrey Epstein.
  • Trump threatened to sue Noah a called him a “total loser” and the Grammys “virtually unwatchable” after the controversial joke.
  • This marks Trump’s sixth public threat of legal action over alleged defamation since returning to office a year ago.
  • The DOJ recently released over 3 million Epstein-related documents, warning some claims against Trump are unfounded.
  • Noah’s joke lands amid heated public scrutiny of the Epstein Files and ongoing claims about Trump’s ties to Epstein.

Trevor Noah’s joke drew a quick and furious response from Donald Trump

Responding on his own Truth Social platform, Trump called the remark defamatory, said he would sue, and insisted he had never previously been accused of what Noah alluded to during the Grammys.

Describing Noah as a “total loser,” Trump also took aim at the awards show broadcast, calling it “virtually unwatchable.”

It’s at least the sixth time Trump has publicly promised legal action over alleged defamation since returning to office a year ago.

The line came after Billie Eilish had won song of the year for “Wildflower,” with Noah setting up his joke by saying the prize is wanted by artists almost as much as Trump wants Greenland.

“Which makes sense. I mean, because Epstein’s island is gone, he needs a new island to hang out with Bill Clinton,” said Noah.

When the audience reacted with some shock, Noah reminded the room it was his final year hosting and asked what anyone was going to do about it.

Earlier in the night, Noah also cracked a meta-joke about Trump’s reputation for suing TV networks, quipping that the show was airing live because if it were edited, Trump would sue CBS.

The timing is part of why the exchange has stuck.

The U.S. Justice Department released 3 million Epstein Files documents on Friday

Two days earlier, the U.S. Department of Justice said it had published more than 3 million additional pages from the Epstein files, plus more than 2,000 videos and 180,000 images—after missing a December 19 deadline set by Congress.

In the same statement, it warned the cache may include fake or falsely submitted material because it includes everything the public sent to the FBI. It also said some documents contain “untrue and sensationalist claims” against Trump submitted right before the 2020 election, adding: “To be clear: the claims are unfounded.”

Full disclosure of the Epstein Files has long been a demand among the rank and file of Trump’s MAGA movement, and something Trump demanded and promised on the presidential campaign trail.

However, since coming to office, Trump for a long time sought to downplay the files, calling them a “hoax,” before more recently urging Republicans to release them under the Epstein Files Transparency Act.

Trump took to social media to threaten legal action against Noah

The newly published material includes a list compiled by the FBI from calls to its National Threat Operations Center hotline, and many entries appear to be unsubstantiated allegations of sexual abuse relating to Trump, Epstein, and other public figures.

Trump has long denied wrongdoing or knowledge of Epstein’s sexual abuse, while acknowledging he knew Epstein socially in the past.

That backdrop makes the Noah line more combustible than a normal celebrity jab: it landed as large volumes of raw material — some duplicated, some redacted, and some potentially bogus — are being sifted in public, fast, and turned into viral claims before anyone finishes reading the footnotes.

Whether a lawsuit goes anywhere is a separate question.

Under U.S. defamation law, public officials generally face a high bar and typically must prove “actual malice” — that a false statement was made knowingly or with reckless disregard for the truth. Courts have also recognized strong protection for obvious satire and parody about public figures.

For now, the public record is simple: a punchline on a big stage, a presidential threat to sue, and a Justice Department release that explicitly cautions the public that some included material is false.

The fact that Trump made the comment "and many of them on the younger side" (and laughed about it while saying what a "great" guy Epstein was) shows he was aware of Epstein's proclivity toward underage girls as se‍x‍u‍al objects. I hate Trump with the hate of a million suns, and am happy that, while he will never be found accountable while he's alive, at least he's aware that there are many millions of us who know he is and was a disgusting pervert and probable child molester.
